Vescovo had an adventurous goal: to break the record for the deepest dive with his submarine (called Limiting Factor). And he succeeded. In May 2019 he reached a depth of 10,928 meters, setting a new world record, breaking the record of captain Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard from 1960 with an extra 12 meters.
Vescovo did this at the Mariana Trench, which at a depth of about 11 kilometers is the deepest known place of all five oceans. During his record attempt, Omega’s Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional accompanied him in the submarines. In fact, Vescovo took three of them to the bottom of the ocean. Two were mounted on the outside on the submarine’s robotic arm and one on the outside on a unit that collected the data. The result? All three watches survived the dive and emerged unharmed.

Developing the Ultra Deep Professional was therefore not an everyday job. A team of experts in various fields was involved, but Omega has managed to develop a watch that is packed with special technologies and yet is no thicker than 28 millimeters.
Although the new Seamaster resembles the existing Seamaster Planet Ocean, the record attempt required new forging technology and weld-free construction. The case, bezel, case back, and crown are milled from the same material as the submarine Limiting Factor itself is also made of 5 Grade titanium. The way the sapphire glass is attached to the case is inspired by the way viewports are designed on submarines. This is done to distribute the pressure better.
Despite Omega’s goal is to create a watch that would survive Victor Vescovo’s mission, the brand has also taken enthusiasts into account.
